The Town of Wolfville has a Civic Addressing Bylaw in place to ensure emergency services and visitors can easily find your property. We're encouraging all residents to take a quick moment to check their civic number signage because in an emergency, every second counts.
Here’s what the bylaw says:
Civic numbers must be clearly visible from the road, day or night.
Numbers must be in Arabic numerals (e.g., 123) and at least 4 inches (10 cm) high.
They must contrast with the background (e.g., white on dark or dark on white).
Numbers should not be obstructed by trees, decorations, or other objects.
A civic number shall be displayed on a post or sign if a civic number that is located on a building cannot be easily read from the roadway or street from which the building is numbered.
What about Multiple Unit Dwellings?
For multiple-unit residential buildings, the bylaw specifies that each unit must have a unique numeric unit, clearly displayed at the main entrance of the unit. Additionally, the main building entrance should prominently display the civic number assigned to the property. These measures are intended to ensure that emergency services, postal deliveries, and visitors can efficiently locate individual units within multi-unit residences.
Why does this matter?
Clear signage helps emergency responders reach you quickly when every second counts. You can read the full bylaw and signage requirements online at Civic Addressing Bylaw.
If your signage doesn’t meet these standards, now’s a great time to update it.
Bylaw enforcement is now performing inspections to ensure all civic number postings are compliant with this bylaw. If you are not compliant, you will receive a letter with the amount of time you have to install your sign.
Please don't wait for a notice, please make sure that everyone is protected by checking that you have the right sign in the right place.
