The Wolfville Waste Water Treatment Plant, located on Old Dyke Lane, was constructed in 1979 to manage all forms of Town wastewater. The original plant design included two aerated lagoon cells, screening for what enters the plant, and ultraviolet disinfection. The treated waste water, known as effluent, is discharged into the Minas Basin.

With growth in our community and a desire to add more environmental protections, the Town has been working on improvements to the Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Improvements include a new third lagoon cell to enhance aeration at the start of the treatment process, which allows natural biological activity to happen more efficiently. The new lagoon cell also increases the time that materials are in the pond before discharge, which is also a benefit to the environment.

A. Currently the Facility discharges approximately 2,500 cubic meters of treated water per day


Q. Is this site protected against sea level rise and flooding?

A. The treatment plant is situated behind the dykes. The plant also has the operation capability to restrict backflow from the river into the plant.


Q. Does this site smell like poo?

A. Currently, no. Sometimes wastewater plants smell bad because bacteria break down organic waste in oxygen-deprived (anaerobic) environments, producing foul-smelling gases like hydrogen sulfide (rotten eggs) and ammonia. These natural byproducts of decomposition escape into the air during the early stages of sewage

A. De-sludging is the process of removing accumulated semi-solid waste (sludge) and floating scum from the bottom and top of wastewater treatment lagoon systems. It is a vital maintenance operation to prevent lagoon build-up, odours, and discharge water quality issues.


Q. When does de-sludging happen?

A. The frequency of de-sludging depends on the volume of wastewater it processes, and the number of people using it. However, the Wolfville treatment plant requires de-sludging every 5 - 10 years to keep running efficiently.


Q. When will the current project be finished?

A. The upgrade project is scheduled to be completed by mid to late summer of 2026


Q. Can I tour this facility?

A. Yes. Once the upgrade is completed, you can call the Public Works department and request a tour of the facility.

A. The areas surrounding the facility are ideal for spotting herons, eagles, sandpipers, warblers, and other birds, depending on the season.
